Process Work
Original prompt
The original prompt for the project was to create 5 mood-boards for an assigned decade, mine being 1900, about various aspects of life in that time period, and choose one to move forward with to relate in some way to modern day.
1900s Mood boards
For my mood boards I ultimately chose to focus on fashion, transportation, entertainment, architecture, and immigration. Out of those five, I found immigration to be the most captivating.
Growing up, learning about immigration in school, it was always something that struck a chord with me, specifically the immigration surge of the 1900s because of my own ancestral connection. My great grandmother emigrated from what was once Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s, a story that her son, my grandfather had told us kids about growing up.
Concepting & Further Development
Moving forward with thumbnails trying to relate the Immigration Surge of the 1900s to the 21st century, I focused in on three concepts: the ongoing housing crises of big cities like NYC, class division based on status, and Immigration being the cultural foundation for many cities like NYC.
Through my thumbnailing and further research, I decided to focus further on the concept of Immigration being the cultural foundation for cities like NYC. I ultimately decided that the most integral representation of culture in NYC comes from the different neighborhoods and the history they offer through their authentic cuisines.
After more research, I decided that my final concept would represent a cultural food festival in Manhattan that celebrates the cultures that populated and cultured the city itself, by featuring authentic and historically driven restaurants.
